FAQS

Information You May Need

I want to prevent any issues that may come up as you browse through the collections. That’s why I’ve provided comprehensive answers to some of our most frequently asked questions, which are listed below.

Do you sell ready made cushions?

No, these are craft products - I only sell kits.

I have never done this sort of thing before. Could I do one of your kits?

Tent stitch is not difficult, I have had many happy customers who have never tried this craft before. The range of  canvases are printed and are very simple, as it is just a case of stitching over the printed areas with wool. Some designs, however, such as those in De Stijl and the Occitan Cross collections, are great first time projects. Supplied with the kit is a simple one page instruction sheet (one side in English, the other side in French) which should give you enough information to get you started. I doesn’t take long to get the feel of the yarn in your hand and sense how little pressure is needed for each stitch to nestle comfortably next to each other.  In time you’ll relax and not pull too hard and discover a natural and relaxed rhythm with each pass of the needle through the canvas.

What is included in my kit?

The kit comes complete with a cotton canvas printed in full colour, enough wool to finish the design, two needles and instruction leaflet, and a design information sheet. Some, not all, but some of the kits have a colour chart  included as an additional guide of more detailed areas if required.

Do I need to use a frame when stitching?

I say Yes.  Working the tent stitch, which is also called a half cross stitch, will distort the canvas slightly as all the stitches go in one direction.  The resulting shape is a slight parallelogram.  Don’t Panic, this is normal. Once the piece is finished it can be squared up and straightened by a process known as blocking.  This can either be done by you and it can be done by a finisher (check out youtube channels for advice about how to do this yourself, or a quick search of the internet can give you a list of local cushion finishers or framers for your finished piece)

Cross stitch on the other hand, does not distort the aïda and therefore does not require a frame, because the cross is made with the thread working two directions making the tension of the thread on the aïda go evenly in two directions.

I do recommend using a scroll frame for all of the printed canvases. The canvas is intentionally longer so it will comfortably fit in a scroll frame. It is also my preference to use a scroll frame for cross stitching.

Does the kit come with a scroll frame?

No. The type of scroll frame can be  personal and many people use different styles of frame to suit their technique, so the choice of frame is up to you.  My preference is for an Easy Clip Scroll Frame.

The 14 inch/35 cm fits in an 18 inch/45 cm wide scroll frame

The 16 inch/41 cm fits in a 21 inch/53 cm wide scroll frame

The 18 inch/46 cm fits in a 24 inch/61 cm wide scroll frame

The canvas seems a bit stiff, does it soften up?
I chose Zweigart canvas because it is a high quality product. It is 100% cotton and then stiffened with a starch derived from potatoes. You can be quite rough with the canvas and it soon softens up. Don’t worry about creases in the canvas, they can be ironed out. Place  the canvas with the printed side down and iron the back of the canvas with an iron using no water, this will get out the majority of the creases, if not all of them.  Once you have finished working the canvas you’ll notice that any trace of the ceases have gone.

I cannot find my needle

The needles are woven next to each other through the edge of the canvas in an unprinted area. If you cannot find them check to see if they have fallen into the bottom of the bag during shipping.

What happens if I run short of wool?

I make each design myself, so I know how much each design needs, but I have added extra just incase a mistake is made and some reverse stitching is required. I also check the contents of the kits twice. Once when assembling them and then again before shipping. If you do experience a shortage of wool please send me an email with your name and provide the name of the kit and together I can get you any extra supplies you may need.

Do you include backing fabric, trimming and cushion pad with the kit?
No, these are needlework kits and can be framed or turned into a cushion afterwards. so you have the freedom to chose the backing to suit your decor.
