France 5 -République needlepoint/tapestry kit
La Marianne.
In 1792 when revolutionaries from the south marched upon Paris, the new republic sought for a new image to represent the State. Marianne, the female allegory of Liberty, was chosen to represent the new regime of the French Republic, as she encompasses liberty, equality, fraternity and reason all at the same time.
The first written mention of the name of the Marianne to designate the Republic appeared in October 1792 in Puylaurens in the Tarn department near Toulouse.
Marianne is displayed in many places in France and holds a place of honour in town halls and law courts.
